Try as we might, some items don’t sell, even after 60 days. For more info on why items don’t sell, check out our article on seasonality, pricing, and downright bad luck.
When items don’t sell, three things happen:
- Your share of selling costs is capped at $5 (whew!)
- Sella covers the rest (e.g. paying Sella Hubs for their time)
- Together, we have to figure out what to do with your item
So what are your options for an unsold item?
Have it returned
Most people want their items back, so we made scheduling returns a snap. You can pick up items from your Sella Hub for free, or have them dropped off (or shipped to you) for a small fee. To make an appointment, head to your account dashboard and click the button that says ‘Schedule a Return.’
Pass it on
If you’re enjoying that clutter-free feeling, you can leave unsold items with Sella, and we’ll do our darndest to get them into the hands of people who will use them.
Believe it or not, simply giving items away is surprisingly expensive: we compensate our Sella Hubs for their time, and on average, it takes them 30-45 minutes to load up items, drop them off at a donation center, and generate a donation receipt.
So instead, we typically sell unwanted items at bargain barrel prices, and then use the proceeds from those sales to offset a portion of the costs we absorb when items don’t sell.
Rest assured: our top priority is to sell your items so we can put hassle-free cash in your pocket! But when that’s not possible, our mission is still to power the circular economy in a scalable, cost-effective manner. Whenever unwanted items find new homes and become useful, that’s a win for our planet and our communities.
If you’d like us to handle your unsold items, just click “Pass it on” and we’ll take care of it.
